It's interesting to see the Revolution theme being played out from different angles. While Anis is starting her revolution from the ground up (raising the standard of living for the commoners), Algad is working his way from the top. As Anis said, they could and SHOULD work together but Al is too blind by his inferiority complex that he didn't see what benefit it will bring if they joined hands. Seems like Anis needs to beat some sense into his small brain to make him realize.

BTW, I know Laine is dying but you don't need to keep focusing on her all the time. How many frames does the studio need to show us to give the point across? It's an obvious time-wasting tactic, if you asked me.

Judgment526 • 1 year ago

I was thinking the entire time that if they simply worked together, they would surely be able to bring about great change, but that is too much for Al's pride I guess...

Pride? That was ground to dust. The bearded idiot won't change his mind that the nation must be ruled by magic wielding nobles and worked to bring the prince to his way of thinking which disgusted the prince.
His father tried to change the nation and failed as he lacked the political power to enforce it. As royals both children were taught about that failure.
Laine was brought in as a sacrifice. A tool ignorant of why she was where she was. The Prince was never affected by the charm ability, instead he got to watch how those who called themselves nobles treated commoners who gained magic. Further disgusting him.
On top of all this his sister almost casually threw away her responsibilities, and found success along a path he wasn't strong enough to follow. Even without magic she charged through the impossible in search of the very thing that he considers rotten with the nation.
Much like our occult curse-lover he thinks of magic as a curse, a curse used to bludgeon the masses into obedience. He wanted to change it and came to the conclusion that something dramatic was needed.
The power to render political opposition irrelevant.
Or the loss of the first prince.
Sometimes a tyrant is necessary to better a nation.
He genuinely respects his sister. His anger comes from how she has done nothing to change this warped nation.
This isn't pride. This is someone who has broken inside.

Judgment526 • 1 year ago

All I see is a man wallowing in his own misery and taking the worst possible approach to his goal without ever making an attempt to properly communicate with his sister or family. Sure, he may be disappointed in Anis for essentially abandoning her own duties, but did he ever try expressing this to her? Maybe talk to her about his own observations of the problems that plague the kingdom and seek help from her even? What would've stopped him from doing so besides petty pride?

Dbz Directioner • 1 year ago

You're are right about that, his approach could be a little better.

Quendi • 1 year ago

If he respects his sister then why did he never consider working together? If he as you say was disgusted by everything the nobles were trying to ingrain into him then why did he never consider working with the person who refuses to listen to the noble hogwash? And lets not forget that he had no issues with murdering Lainie just so that he could get that power. At that point any talk of "we need to treat commoners better" is out the window since he himself is utterly incapable of doing so himself. Like did he intervene when the commoner girl outside the carriage was pestered by the nobles? Nope he did fuck all. So his whole "i want to change the nation" so that commoners are treated as equals is complete bullshit when he himself isn't even practicing what he preaches. His sister is actually trying to better the lives of everyone while Algard has done what? Publicly shamed Euphie with lies, Injured the maid that has prolly been with them for years now and of course the looming problem of him quite possibly murdering Lainie. He's going down the path of tyranny but it sure as hell ain't heading into the direction of bettering the nation one fucking bit.

Algard very much is suffering from a hurt pride and inferiority complex. The fact that he not once considered working with his sister is already or heck even asking for help. Nope none of that ever crossed his small pea sized brain. Algard is closer to hating his sister then respecting her.

But Algard sure as hell is acting like a true noble in this episode trampling over a commoners life and stealing power no matter what. But he's to stupid to realize that he became what he set out to "destroy".

Klaxxi • 1 year ago

Worst part is that he dislikes her choice to not take the crown but if she acted somewhat the same while still being the heir then he would still object to her and in turn try to take the crown so its a lose lose situation and ofc he never talked with her once about anything sure they are royals but it looks like he didnt even try to get her on his side while also calling her a monster so dunno why the others think that he respects her

Quendi • 1 year ago

Well it's honestly only this Deus guy that thinks he respects his sister. Why? I have no fucking clue. There's been no showcase of even a little shred of respect.

problems will never be gone, just replaced by new ones. even if discrimination is overcome and everyone becomes equal, other problems will arise bringing a new type of suffering. if all people of authority join hands in a genuine effort for everyone's uniform happiness, suffering could be reduced to the bare minimum, but hoping for that is too fairy tale like. this fairy tale like scenario where all people in authority replace their perverse greed and personal pleasure by genuine good will and hard work becomes possible with AL's new vampire powers.

AL becomes the absolute authority and in his reign most suffering may actually be eradicated. but what happens after that ? once AL is no more there to do the brainwashing everything crumbles again, all peace would have been a temporary illusion. if he passes on his power it means absolute authority will always be held in the hands of a single person. what if the power gets in the hands of the wrong person? there would be no counterforce to oppose and absolute peace would be replaced by absolute suffering. that is why multiple factions exists, so that the one in power has constant fear of doing something bad just to be exposed and overtaken by the competition.

even if everyone from the authoritive side is brainwashed to be genuinely good, and suffering inflicted by nobels on commoners is eradicated, other problems will arise bringing a new type of suffering. that's just how humans are. thus there is no right answer. if both heartless domination or genuine love equally provide no answer, if both are equal in their outcome, why not just be on the side that doesn't kill

«Power Corrupts & Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely» -Lord Acton (1857)

Absolute-Authority will most-certainly do nothing to the Corruption of a Country other than to make it even more corrupt, and, a right answer does exist but involves the requirement of Wisdom and positive social-engineering.

Over-Riding the False-Beliefs & Negative-Indoctrinations (and I should probably add a 3rd one to this list being the «War-Mongering» Paradigms) of a whole entire Culture is not an over-night only-take-a-day process after all.

Adam Jenkins • 1 year ago

I will throw in a counter-point.
A Tyrant's purpose in bettering the nation is akin to a wildfire destroying a forest.
The Tyrant in and of it self is an evil entity. True evil is a being that has absolutely no empathy, or interest in how the world views it.
The betterment of the nation comes after the tyrants fall as it destroys stagnated tradition and thus removes any chains such a nation may have to it's past.
Tradition comes about as a result of small things. Climatic threats, ecological threats, and plain old threats shape the core. Celebrations of the new year or the coming of spring was a way of saying "We Survived" as a great number would perish in the bitter cold.
However as technology advances many of the traditions root causes are lost, or rendered irrelevant. These become traditions for the sake of tradition. Not inherently bad, but there are those that halt progress, or actively work against the nations continued survival. These are the traditions that do not survive the Tyrant. Because they don't care. And afterward those traditions that were harmful to the nation struggle to regain their power.
This is not national exclusive however. A different nations Tyrant may make positive change in another nation. The move to have women in the workforce and the destruction of the tradition that counteracted it both came about through mass death of soldiers whilst fighting a Tyrant, aka Hitler.

Mega-Chad-Type-Hero • 1 year ago

Hmm, not sure how well it necessarily works as a counter-point, considering that it has been my observations & experiences that «corrupt» people never actually view themselves as corrupt, but, even the «tyrants» will view themselves as the «good guys» or at the least «more important» than the «commoners/peons/peasants/etc.»

And I prefer not to use terms that are too subjective (e.g. : good vs evil) due to how there is such ambiguity in how people use/interpret such vocabulary. I could use «Spiritual» terms such as «Light» energy versus «Dark» energy, but, I will necessarily need to «qualify» what I mean by Spiritual-Light-Energies versus Spiritual-Dark-Energies, and it should make no difference as to whether or not anybody believes in so-called «Spiritual» things or not; the terms being used here are entirely in reference to «Positive-Expression» versus «Negative-Expression» ...both of them revolving around their effects upon emotions (causing either better or worse feelings in others or even oneself). Positive-Expression being activities like Honesty, Forgiveness, Mercy, Compassion, Creativity, Integrity, Kindness, Patience, Educative, Productive, Nurturing, Generous, Humble, etc. Negative-Expression being activities like Deceit, Revenge, Mercilessness, Cruelty, Punishment, Abuse, Stealing, Thievery, Kidnapping, Impatience, Hostage-Taking, Hostage-Holding, Ransom, Murder, Killing, Manipulation, Genocide, Betrayal, Tantrums, Greedy, Arrogant, Narcissistic, Treason, etc.

And as for «outdated traditions» (a lot of them apparently still exist in just about every culture) I find the word blurred with what can be called : Rituals...

Rituals are usually introduced by someone who is full of vanity and arrogance as-if though they received such a «revelation from God» and think themselves «special» as a result (even though there are most-certainly arrogant/vain discarnates who falsely believe themselves to be either God or some sort of conduit for the voice/mind of God) and there must now be thousands of different rituals scattered amongst the various religions/cults who think they have to keep on repeating these «ritualistic» activities every day or every week or every month as-if though it were a command of God even when it has absolutely nothing to do what-so-ever with demonstrating one's ACTIONS as either of the Positive-Expression (worthy) or Negative-Expression (unworthy) before the «eyes» of their/our Creator(s)...

Indeed, there will always be strife in life, even if we lived in a utopia. Suffering is a tool the universe uses to create greater complexity and wisdom, it doesn't end until you die.

Zack D. • 1 year ago

You explained it perfectly.. because I see he has high respect for his sister and is pissed asf that she ain't doing nothing to change this kingdom...and u can def see she doesn't care how ppl view but not everyone is like her

iCurvaceous • 1 year ago

I disagree. "she ain't doing nothing to change this kingdom" yet all her research is making leaps and bounds for the commoners gap by literally not shouldering said same responsibility and working with the commoners herself- figuring out what could be useful for non magic users. The nobles is trying to hold her back, and her brother joins hands with them several times without even noticing. What are you talking about? Her intent is selfish but her outcome is reaching. That's the whole problem he pointed out.

He himself said he saw exactly what was happening with the changes she's making to the kingdom with her research. His trap was literally about her having a conference about how her research could improve commoners lives.

He blames his sister for him being heir to king, yet he wants to be king. Where is the accountability? He can't even take accountability for taking a commoner's life as a noble if he succeeds... yet he wants to improve the situation when he's literally not leading by example.

They need to hit the 22-23 minimum mins for airing. What would you have suggested they do. Panning is another method for reducing associated animation costs. Perhaps they needed to save their budget for next ep. Did ya think of that? Not every studio is ufotable with unlimited budget works. Most studios will drop their quality somewhere during a dialogue heavy episode and save it for their action packed sequence ep. Unless you want a 10min anime short so that you can feel better. Anime weebs are getting more and more entitled.

Mind your own dam business -Joey Swoll

KFA • 1 year ago

The fact of the matter is that currently this anime is competing with other well made animes out there where the time wasting techniques are more advanced or the story is more engaging to make you not care. Given this, comparison is only natural even if it seems unfair.

MeguminExplosion • 1 year ago

Reasonable counter argument i suppose. Doubt studios are "competing" like we think they are. Studios arent defense contractors bidding for shows and rights. Most of the time its for a paycheck or they like their job. Not because they have to outdo some other studio.

I have some ADHD so I dont tend to hyper focus enough to be bothered on points like OP said. As sub watchers we already spend a lot of time focusing on the translations. If anything this would probably bother dub viewers more as they have the few extra seconds saved from reading and actually watching the scene.

KFA • 1 year ago

I'm not implying that studios are competing with each other but rather that the viewers can more easily find something to cry about because they have the comparison in the first place. If this season was poor showing this kind of nitpicking would be less prominent and people would cry about larger issues, like shit cgi.

Leo Aestron • 1 year ago

Joining hands, but I don't think Algard would think of asking his sister for that.

Their relationship worsened ever since Anis gave up on the throne.

While the King and Duke busy taking care about the kingdom affair, Anis and her friends focus in researching magic tools.

Algard is the only one who noticed the corruption within the kingdom.

It is true as you said, he was blinded by his inferiority complex.

But, other than that, I think he can't trust most of the nobles.

Other than that, I agree with everything he said and accept the reason he hurted Iliya and Lainie.

Among all antagonist prince from every villainess or similar anime, Algard is without a doubt placed as the only and the best, standing on the pedestal compared to them.
Which is why I had been supporting his character since episode 1.

Even so, it still sadden me that he had to resort to such inhuman act, killing one who trusted him and going against his sister, his own family.
Algard made mistake, but if only Anis and her father noticed the change in him sooner... this might not have happened, this became a family problem.

I'm sure more viewers hate Algard now, but I guess I'm the only one who would still support him.

Dbz Directioner • 1 year ago

People are just straight up hating on him, Atleast try to see things from his Perspective. But I do agree that his approach to this matter is totally Wrong. But this reminded me of when Everything hates on Sasuke without trying to Understand his perspective.

nara • 1 year ago

Their relationship suffer from before that actually. I believe Anis set on her magicology before she give up the throne. And she give up the throne to give it to Algard.

This is a complicated situation where the results is only lose-lose because both prides and human emotions.

Anis genuinely only wanting to bring happiness to the world by seeking her dream of magic. Algard genuinely wanted to fix the kingdom main problem that is the division of nobility and commoner caused by magic.

The freaking problem is both have terminal communication problems. Anis try to play 4D chess that Algard can't understand and misunderstanding her actions instead of just talking to him. While Algard is too prideful to see the good will that Anis given to him.

Leo Aestron • 1 year ago

Actually, no...
This is the sad part...
Anis and Algard were very close as siblings and loved each other as family when they were very young.
Whatever happened afterward completed destroyed their relationship :(
The stupid throne and succession and stupid nobility tradition.

I hope you didn't miss that one flashback of their past in one of the previous episodes.

realistic approach for our modern morality - maybe
for late medieval morality - completely not

I'd say the setting is Late Medieval-ish with bits and pieces of later periods but still no one (or almost no one) it that times cared about commoners

Ellias Ainsworth • 1 year ago

he using self righteous woke bullshit about the commoner situation as an excuse to commit murder on Lainie (who was a commoner for most of her life and technically being a baron daughter shouldn't have drastically change her lifestyle since barons are bottom rung noble barely any wealthier than the average commoner or even worse in some case) . he's just gaslighting his sister to satisfy his narcissistic impulse and cover his jealousy . in short he's a psychopath throwing a tantrum so big sister pay attention to him, tell his parents to restrict his tiktok and twitter acc asap anf fire his woke teacher .

I don't know but it's not really that bad, IMO. And this is a big IP in Japan, so, I saw it coming miles away.

Noah Winns-Cromer • 1 year ago

I'll admit I enjoyed Eminence a lot more than I did CSM that's for sure.

DistantMist • 1 year ago

Yeah, CSM anime never hit it off with me def going to just stick with the manga for that series.

Noah Winns-Cromer • 1 year ago

I never liked the characters, and the story was OK at best. The animation and music were the only reason CSM's even good.
Denji and Aki are OK but nothing to write home about. Power a psycho who tried to kill Denji for a cat, and why people would like a girl who doesn't bathe let alone flush, I'll never understand. Himeno's the only one I actually like, and the hate for Kobeni is ironic.
And I ESPECIALLY never liked Makima, I only care for her because of her VA.

xXPORTALXx • 1 year ago

Yeaah idk that whole genre of sorta serious, grungy, drama is hard to pull off in anime imo. It's like trying to make a sharp artwork in crayon, it can be done, but it doesn't come naturally to the media so most attempts fall flat or look like crap. When they do come together tho it certainly stands above the chaff, but I think it's the pursuit of those (or maybe the hope for?) that drives ppl to become overly invested in shows that are actually just flops imo

Noah Winns-Cromer • 1 year ago

Right?

I've been asking this for YEARS! I mean it's OK, I like it to a degree, but I wouldn't call it a must watch.

Lynx♥ • 1 year ago

The Eminece in Shadow is not an amazing series by any means, but it's not that bad either. Most people wouldn't even watch it then, the reception of is mostly positive and in the end it got quite popular in too. Both in JP and outside of it. Meanwhile the people didn't expect much from it at the start, so it was kind of underground for a while, but then after a few major fight scenes it started building up some hype and it got more popular.
The series main plot definitely sounds dumb on paper, but it actually works. It does what it can do best, and for the most part it's just Cid being cool and edgy, while being a big goofball at the same time, trying to fulfill his chūnibyō fantasies.
It doesn't try to pretend like it's something else. It's just like your basic fun pass time shitshow isekai anime with an overpowered MC, except that the show is self-aware of the fact. And that's what makes it stand out from many other isekai anime and the like. All I can say The Misfit of Demon King Academy pales in comparison. I would even dare to say it's better than Overlord, but hey... that's a hot take for another day.
This is to say it's definitely above most other isekai's out there. Then again, the bar on the isekai genre is not very high to begin with. So it's not really saying much. And I totally get it why some people wouldn't like the anime, my point being is just that it ain't that bad imo.

TensaiTensi • 1 year ago

I know it's supposed to be a parody, but I just can't see it for that. The whole premise of "chuuni's delusions are accidentally and conveniently real" just doesn't sit well with me when the mc is so unlikeable. I've seen the first 2 or 3 episodes, and I just couldn't watch further, it was more cringe than entertaining for me.

That said, I don't think it's a bad show objectively. From what I've seen, it's mid to decent in quality, I can't comment on the humor since it doesn't clap with me. So overall, it's a pretty hit or miss show, and seemingly it hits with way more people than I anticipated.

Noah Winns-Cromer • 1 year ago

Just because it's a parody, or it's not meant not to be taken seriously, doesn't mean it can't be criticized, I hate that argument so much. We've seen more than enough examples of parody anime done well that I give little leeway to shows like Eminence that either do next to nothing or try too hard to make me like it. You ever notice how anytime someone uses the parody argument and then when said parody falls flat, or any stupid excuse, it's ALWAYS either an isekai, fantasy, ecchi, or the occasional romcom? And then everyone acts surprised when shows like Eminence and Rent-A-Girlfriend get greenlit for more sequels. Plus we've had better anime that are also "not meant to be taken seriously", like SpyXFamily, Bocchi the Rock, Tomo-chan, Do It Yourself, Buddy Daddies, and Onimai, so IDK what the f*** people are about, talking about parodies.

That aside, the main issue is the comedy, it wants to be meta, while trying to be self-aware, and the jokes don't land when the MC makes isekai references every 10 minutes. And given Cid's actions as the "average Joe", yeah I can see an argument made as him being unlikable. There's a reason the whole convenience thing works with Ainz in Overlord. Plot wise, not very much, and the characters are hit or miss.

Granted, it's not terrible, you're right, but if you want an isekai worth your time, especially in the parody department, if you haven't already, check out Isekai Ojisan.

Noah Winns-Cromer • 1 year ago

We had that farming anime Noumin Kanren, Renai Flops, and Beast Tamer airing last season. And that crap ninja anime Shinobi no Ittoki.

Hate to break it to you, but that's not an accomplishment. Calling Eminence "good" is giving it a bit too much credit. That's like saying Black Summoner is better than My Isekai Life. It's not.
